ESI Challenge of the Month

Melissa Ralph (from Cormac, a Cornwall Council company) took up the ESI Challenge of the Month for May 2026.

Melissa Ralph delivered the #esiChallengeOfTheMonth (hybrid) talk "Making Space for Nature in Cornish towns" in the ESI Trevithick Room on Monday 18 May 1 - 2pm.

Green infrastructure in urban areas such as green spaces and road verges can bring benefits such as reduced heat in summer, reduced flooding, reduced air pollution and benefits wildlife as well as people’s mental and physical health.

ESI researchers have been working on the project Making Space for Nature, previously the Green Infrastructure for Growth project. This was a collaboration between the Â鶹ֱ²¥, Cornwall Council and Cormac.

We welcomed landscape architect Melissa Ralph, who is the manager of Making Space for Nature, to deliver this talk. Melissa was joined by Urban Rangers Becky Pack and Kelly Strange along with Cornwall Council’s Charlotte Evans.

Making Space for Nature was crowned a winner in the Landscape Institute Awards 2022 in the ‘Excellence in Biodiversity, Conservation and Enhancement’ category.

This talk was part of the World Biodiversity Day celebrations held during the week of 18 May at the ESI.
